Moses Lake Sand Dunes faces possible closure & restrictions.
The Sand Scorpions have always fought to keep our riding areas open to all of us.
The State of Washington has decided to take away all the funds that have been set aside for ORV improvements, operation, maintance, and enforcement and turned it over to the Washington State Parks. This in affect has taken $100.000 each year that would normally go to our managers the Grant Co. Sheriffs Dept.
Working with the ORV Sheriff the Sand Scorpions and other user groups will be forming a committee to help our managers get through thies tough times.
We need your help. We have dedicated a web page to this issue and ask that you go to it and take the web poll. Also on this page are all the latest news articles and info available pertaining to this problem. Just click on the Save Our Sands button.

Sand Scorpions erect land mark at Moses Lake sand dunes
SOUTH POLE ERECTED 11/08/09
see pictures page 5
Where down by the south end of Moses Lake near the beach. We move it here so the family can go swimming as the weather will be very hot. Time 12:00 noon. We will be showing up at the dunes at 12:00 noon with the race trailer. The racing will start as soon as we are able to get everything set up and running, so the more people who show up to help the sooner we will be racing. We had a great time last year as the events got larger each night. It will be a great time for all those armatures to get used to the lights and their machines, and a perfect opportunity for those local pros to test and tune theirs. All off road vehicles welcome. . www.sandscorpion.net

Saturday Sand Drags
July 30th

Where Moses Lake Sand Dunes at the south end of Moses Lake. We moved this event to Saturday hoping to attract more racers. This is our most aggressive event we have attempted so far and the last two year's was great fun. This event is open to all off roaders from Bikes. Quads, 4X4s, 2X4s, side by sides and Sand Rails. This event will encompass the whole dunes. The Start / Finish line will be on top Competition Hill down by the south end of Moses Lake and the course will follow the outer edge of the ORV area. One lap will be about 17miles long through sand, dirt, mud, and water crossings. There will be 7 check points around the course marked with an 8ft helium balloon one at each check point and each a different color. Each group will be lined up and we will have a dead engine start. When the starter gun goes off you will have to start your vehicle and race cross country to each check point. The persons who complete the course in the proper order the fastest wins. We will be starting the fastest vehicles 1st and spacing the groups about 30 min apart to help prevent accidents. Bikes 1st, Quads 2nd, Sand Rails 3rd, 2X4 and 4X4s last. The 1st group will start at 12:00 noon. This is one event you won’t want to miss. Lots of speed and technical terrain to cover dodging brush and mud holes and finding your way through the maze of trails out in flats Entry fee $2.00 donation to Sand Scorpions. . www.sandscorpion.net ( check out pictures Home page 1,2 & 4)

September 2nd to Sept 5th
This event is especially fun for the whole family as we all get together for a truly off road camp out. We all get together and travel out to what we call channel island sand bar just about as far out in the mud flats as you can get. We set our camp on one of the largest sand beaches anywhere about a 4 mile cross country trek from the main road. We set up our race trailer and play music each evening. On Saturday at 12 noon we do mud drags across mother natures own slime pits. On Sunday at 10am we have Australian Pursuit races around Indy a set of ponds that has a trail around them. We place all the racers evenly spaced apart around the course. The starter stands in the center of the course and starts the race. The object is to catch the person ahead of you and if you do he is out. The race who is the farthest along in a certain amount of laps is the winner. We have classes for Bikes, Quads, and Rails, a 4X4s2X4s. Saturday and Sunday afternoon at about 6pm we set up the drag lights and have sand drags on the beach. No entry fees Drag racing and an Australian Pursuit race. This year weare planning to have a Carnei Asada BBQ sandwich dinner so be sure to bring some type of side dish to share with everyone. We also get together each night at camp with Drum circles, night runs through mud flats, music over the pa system and lots of bench racing. . www.sandscorpion.net ( check out pictures page 1, 3, & 4 )

Notice!!! Had to move the event 2000 yards north of our usual place as the water level has risen since 2 days ago.
Just go West out the gravel road at the West enterence to the dunes ( job corp dike) we will be at the end of it.
Watch for the 6 huge multi colored16 ft Flutter flags.
Where. Moses Lake Sand Dunes, North West end of the mud flats. Follow the Sand Scorpions event signs out the gravel road starting at the west entrance to the dunes. Westlake side entrance to red zone. Out to the mud flats where we have located several different mud holes. We divide the vehicles with winches from the ones without. The vehicles with the winches become the team leaders and draw their team members from a hat with all the other entries in it. Each team has 3 members and each team lines up at a different mud hole. All of the mud holes are joined together with a trail forming a race course. The object is to get your team through your mud hole, race down the trail to the next mud hole. The team that completes the whole course 1st wins. The Mud holes are wide enough to allow for passing if the team ahead of you is stuck in the pit. Normally you will have 5 or 6 pits to complete. Last year event was very tough. Entry fee $2.00 donation per member. After the mud bog races we will move over to the mud flats area for some Australian Persuit racing. Lots of high speed, slimy mud, and water crossings. ( check out pictures Home page 2 & 4 )

Yellow zone mud flats clean up.
October 8th
Yellow zone mud flats clean up. The Grant County Sheriffs Dept and the Dept Of Wildlife give us special permission to go back out into the yellow zone for a last chance clean up. As you all know the yellow zone is all ready closed to us for the season but our group is allowed this time to go back out and clean up the area. We start at 10am and go till 2pm so the hunters can still get in there morning and evening hunts. This is a great way to do the right thing for the environment and also lets go for 1 more mud flat run. Each year we haul out several truck loads of trash. . www.sandscorpion.net
